FREDERICTON – Today in the Legislative Assembly, Green Party Leader and MLA for Fredericton South David Coon tabled An Act Respecting the Right to a Healthy Environment. The bill proposes to safeguard the rights of all present and future residents of New Brunswick to a healthy and ecologically balanced environment.
“A healthy environment will lead to positive health outcomes for New Brunswickers both now and for future generations,” said Coon. “If passed, this bill will help ensure this goal is achieved.”
Corporate pollution disasters like the Saint John American Irons & Metals (AIM) explosion and air pollution from the Richibucto Coastal Shell Product plant have residents worried about their health, the health of their children, and the safety of the land they harvest and the air they breathe.
“New Brunswickers are being chased into their homes and out of their communities in order to escape environmental challenges and pollution,” stated Coon. “Successive Liberal and Conservative governments have done nothing to ensure New Brunswickers have a healthy environment, so we are taking the initiative to legally create this right.”
