Green Party Leader Calls on Higgs to Step up Commitments Around Energy Efficiency

Fredericton – Green Party Leader and MLA for Fredericton-South David Coon calls on the Higgs government to take swift action in the area of energy efficiency to help customers reduce their power bills and implement one of the most important actions in NB’s Climate Change Action Plan.

“Energy efficiency reduces our energy costs, while shrinking our carbon footprint. In the face of rising power rates, energy efficiency programs are the quickest way for us to actually shrink our power bills,” says Coon. “The Provincial Energy Efficiency Scorecard ranked New Brunswick 8th out of 10 provinces, and that poor score doesn’t even reflect NB Power’s recently announced cuts to their energy efficiency programs.”

Last month, NB Power quietly filed a notice to the Energy and Utilities Board that they intend to slash the budget of their residential energy savings program by 60% and cut their overall assistance to help customers to reduce power costs by 53%.

New Brunswick’s Green Party leader wants Premier Higgs to consider adopting Nova Scotia’s very successful approach to helping people cut energy costs through its arms-length energy efficiency agency called Efficiency One.
