Green Housing critic makes housing strategy submission
FREDERICTON – Green housing critic and MLA for Memramcook-Tantramar Megan Mitton has submitted ideas for the province’s upcoming housing strategy to Housing Minister Jill Green on behalf of the Green Caucus.
“Over the years, I have been pushing for different measures that would modernize the Residential Tenancies Act and provide better protections to New Brunswick tenants,” said Mitton. “I hope these recommendations will be included in the new housing strategy that Minister Green is preparing.”
In her submission, Mitton calls for better protections for tenants, major investments in new public, non-profit, and cooperative units, more protections for public housing residents, as well as improvements for senior housing and energy poverty.
“Protecting tenants starts with reinstating a rent cap to keep prices stable,” said Mitton. “And if the government is really serious about protecting tenants, then the rent cap should be tied to vacant rental units to ensure that when a tenant moves into a new rental unit, it remains affordable.”
