Campobello Island residents need year-round direct access to their own country: Green Party leader
FREDERICTON – Green Party leader and MLA for Fredericton-South, David Coon, boarded the ferry to Campobello Island on Tuesday in his efforts to bring an affordable year-round ferry to the Island, connecting it to the New Brunswick mainland.
“After meeting with Campobello mayor and several concerned citizens on the Island, I am more convinced than ever that it is time for a year-round ferry to Campobello,” said Coon. “The COVID-19 pandemic in particular has made this issue not only one of principle or convenience, but of health and public safety.”
For most of the year, residents of Campobello are forced to drive through the US to get to Canada. This has become increasingly dangerous and stressful during the pandemic, especially during a surge of COVID cases in the US. The summer ferry to Campobello Island from Deer Island costs $54 per round trip, while the Deer Island ferry is free.
“Without an affordable year-round ferry to Campobello, I worry about the very survival of this island community,” said Coon.
