Tantramar gas plant EIA must include robust public consultation and expert review

TANTRAMAR – Green Caucus Environment Critic and MLA for Tantramar Megan Mitton has written to Environment Minister Gilles LePage requesting that he ensure a comprehensive provincial environmental impact assessment (EIA) is conducted for NB Power’s proposed gas plant in Tantramar, and that it includes provisions for public participation such as in-person public consultation sessions.

“This is a complex project. It’s the first new power plant and first fossil gas plant built in New Brunswick in decades,” said Mitton. “For these reasons, it’s vital that this project go through a robust provincial environmental impact assessment process.”

On July 14, NB Power announced their plans to source power from a new fossil gas plant owned by a private American company, which is being proposed in the Centre Village area of Tantramar. The project will lock NB Power intoburning costly fracked gas for at least25 years. It’s up to the Minister of Environment to determine any conditions placed on the provincialEIA process.

“This project will cost ratepayers, increase emissions, threaten sensitive wetlands, and disrupt important wildlife corridors between provinces, not to mention the impacts on local residents,” added Mitton. “We need to ensure professionals, including independent external experts, with the proper expertise are on the technical review committee.”
