Green Bill Advances to Law Amendments Committee
FREDERICTON – Following second reading debate in the Legislative Assembly this afternoon, Green Party Leader David Coon’s Bill 19: An Act Respecting the Right to a Healthy Environment moved forward to the next step after being sent to the Law Amendments Committee for further study.
“Sending Bill 19 to the Law Amendments Committee will ensure New Brunswickers are heard, and First Nations can propose improvements to ensure it is consistent with their constitutionally protected rights,” said Coon.
The Law Amendments Committee will hold public hearings the bill, hearing from expert witnesses, including First Nations. The Committee will then issue a report containing its recommendations. The proposed legislation can then be reintroduced based on the changes recommended by the Committee.
“It is now incumbent upon Rob McKee, as the chair of the Law Amendments Committee, to schedule public hearings on this bill in the fall,” added Coon. “I look forward to collaborating with the government to ensure that happens.”
