Green MLAs to focus on affordability and self-sufficiency in Legislature this fall
FREDERICTON – The 61st Legislative Assembly will begin its 3rd session on Tuesday with the Speech from the Throne. Ahead of the session, Green Party leader David Coon and Green Party house leader Megan Mitton have announced that they will focus on promoting tangible policies to reduce the cost of living for those struggling to make ends meet and improve New Brunswick’s economic self-sufficiency.
“For many New Brunswickers, the electricity they buy from NB Power is becoming unaffordable,” said Coon. “The Holt government needs to follow through on their promised solar retrofit program so all New Brunswickers can access cheap energy from the sun and also create a low-income electricity support program to help those who need it most.”
Coon and Mitton are calling on the Holt government to make investments in self-sufficiency by growing local economies and creating jobs that will have direct benefits on New Brunswick communities by powering the renewable energy transition and investing in the care New Brunswickers need.
“New Brunswickers are struggling to afford the costs to access the care they need to keep themselves healthy,” added Mitton. “Whether it’s the cost of long-term care in special care homes, transportation to medical appointments, or basic preventative health measures like the shingles vaccine, care is increasingly unaffordable. There is a clear role for government to help address these barriers by capping surcharges in special care homes, expanding accessible public transportation, and covering the cost of the shingles vaccine.”
