FREDERICTON – David Coon, leader of the New Brunswick Green Party, today slammed Premier Higgs for misleading New Brunswickers about his government’s $300 affordability benefit.
“It is incredulous that Premier Higgs has prohibited the most vulnerable including seniors from receiving his $300 affordability benefit,” said Coon. “People were counting on receiving this benefit and now they have had the rug pulled out from under them by Premier Higgs.”
During the State of the Province address Premier Higgs stated that all New Brunswick families with a net income under $70,000 would be eligible to receive the benefit. A government press release issued late Tuesday afternoon clarified that only New Brunswickers with employment income of $3000 or more in 2022 or 2023 would be eligible.
“In taking this step, the Premier has abandoned those most in need, including seniors, students, the poor, and the disabled,” said Coon. “He must immediately remove the requirement for earning at least $3000 in employment income, so that everyone in need will qualify.”
