Green Party MLA Megan Mitton Tables Bill to Ban Conversion Therapy in New Brunswick
Fredericton – Green Party MLA, Megan Mitton tabled a bill to ban the practice of conversion therapy in New Brunswick today in the Legislature.
“Last year when I tabled a motion calling on government to ban conversion therapy I was met with resistance from people who don’t think conversion therapy is happening in New Brunswick,” says Mitton, “But, over the past year brave individuals from across the province have come forward and publicly shared their stories, showing the need for this legislation.”
The bill will make it illegal for regulated health professionals or someone in a position of trust or authority to practice conversion therapy on a minor; any offence would be subject to a fine. The bill will also prevent any organizations that provide or advocate for conversion therapy from receiving government funds.
“As a third party, we have such limited time to bring legislation forward for debate, so I am inviting the other parties to table amendments or improvements to this bill,” says Mitton. “This is a fundamental human rights issue and I will gladly support any bill that would end this practice.”
