Green Party leader David Coon Calls for Greater Ambition on Energy Efficiency

FREDERICTON – Today, David Coon, Green Party Leader and MLA for Fredericton South, tabled a motion in the Legislative Assembly calling on the Higgs government to ensure more New Brunswickers can cut their energy costs by accessing free heat pumps and insulation through the Enhanced Energy Savings Program.

“New Brunswickers are struggling to make ends meet due to rising energy costs, and at the same time we need to cut carbon pollution,” stated Coon. “Expanding and enhancing the free heat pumps and insulation program will achieve both of these goals, while putting a carbon tax on home heating fuels will not.”

Coon’s motion calls on the Higgs government to:

  • Invest a minimum of $120 million to clear the Enhanced Energy Savings Program’s existing waitlist,
  • Raise the income threshold of the Enhanced Energy Savings Program to $75,000,
  • Establish zero-interest energy retrofit loans for moderate income households, and
  • Raise the regulate energy efficiency savings target for NB Power to 1.5% of sales by 2025.

“The upfront capital costs of energy retrofits are a barrier for many moderate income New Brunswickers,” said Coon. “A zero-interest loan program for energy retrofits would make all the difference for many people who want to make these important upgrades.”
