Green Housing Critic Calls for Permanent Rent Cap

FREDERICTON – Today MLA for Memramcook-Tantramar and Green Housing Critic Megan Mitton tabled a motion in the Legislature urging the government to establish a permanent rent cap.

“The increasing cost of rent is exacerbating the affordability crisis that many New Brunswickers are facing,” said Mitton. “The Higgs government is failing to protect tenants from unaffordable rent increases.”

The Green caucus has twice attempted to have a law passed to establish a permanent rent cap. And while a temporary rent cap was implemented in 2022, it has since expired.

“Housing is a fundamental human right and affordable and stable housing is essential for the well-being of all New Brunswickers,” Mitton added. “We will continue to be relentless in our efforts to establish a rent cap because it is essential to keep rents affordable and protect affordable housing stock.”
