FREDERICTON – In light of a new independent analysis that says that the cost of complying with the federal clean fuel standard adds less than one cent per litre to the cost of gasoline, Green Party leader David Coon says it’s time to put an end to the Higgs gas tax known as the carbon adjuster.

“The Higgs gas tax is raising the price of gas for New Brunswickers while providing a windfall to the refinery,” said Coon. “This has already cost drivers millions of dollars, so it’s time to axe the tax Higgs dedicated to the refinery.”

The independent report by Energy Super Modelers and International Analysts found that the Higgs gas tax should not have exceeded 0.2 cents per litre this year, yet New Brunswickers were initially charged eight cents per litre, then 6.17 cents per litre.

Higgs’ gas tax is just another example of him putting his corporate friends ahead of the wellbeing of New Brunswickers,” said Coon. “He should axe that tax.”
